The Art Store is a playful and provocative space that complements the gallery’s changing shows.
The Here is Your Horizon edition of the Art Store presents a takeover by artist Samuel Tupou that is inspired by the outmoded technology and cultural nostalgia of 1980’s games arcades. Commissioned by Cement Fondu, Tupou has created a freestanding arcade machine and adorned one wall with a painted design of a pixelated sunset over water. Rendered in high-key colour, Tupou’s bright and graphic patterns simultaneously reflect traditional Tongan tapa designs. For the Art Store he has created a series of paintings and T-shirts that are available to purchase.
Also featured in the store are hand-woven text-based mats by Here is Your Horizon artist Serene Timoteo, jewellery by Bilum & Bilas, a PNG-based social enterprise that supports female artisans to develop a wider market for their crafts and improve their livelihoods, hand-dyed wall-hangings and silk works by artist Kathryn Tsui, earrings, bangles and repurposed vintage pieces by artist Chantal Fraser, and jumpers and tops by collective Get to Work.
