PROJECT SPACE CALL OUT 2024

APPLICATIONS FOR THIS CALL OUT HAVE NOW CLOSED

Cement Fondu is proud to nurture artistic experimentation, risk-taking and innovation, and we invite you, our community, to play an active role.

We are delighted to invite you to submit EOIs to create and present a new installation in our Project Space for our BETTER NATURE Art + Events Program in 2024.

The Project Space is curated through a selection process that seeks propositions to complement Cement Fondu’s main exhibitions. We are looking for EOIs that respond imaginatively to the space through immersive, experimental, social or evolving installations. The opportunity is for artists at all stages of their careers who want to expand their practice while creating high-quality outcomes. A commission fee and production budget is provided.

CALL OUT
BETTER NATURE – A Sudden Release
12 October – 8 December 2024

This call out invites proposals that embrace climate fictions and/or Indigenous futures.

This Project Space installation will be presented alongside our annual BETTER NATURE Art + Events program that explores different ecological ideas from a more-than-human perspective. In 2024, the BETTER NATURE exhibition will centre First Nations storytelling and imaginaries that envision life beyond climate catastrophe in a world of ecological extremes.

A Sudden Release explores Indigenous futures in a world of ancient methane release. Simulations for thermal radiation levels in runaway climate models have predicted that levels causing catastrophic climate apocalypse wouldn’t be reached in human existence. But what happens in a world where a sudden release of energy from arctic ice causes runaway climate change? The land loses water, and we live in conditions akin to the surface of Venus. Indigenous techniques in speculating climate change and environmental trauma focus on the story of the trauma to Country itself. We are not individuals in our future watching the spectacle of the world ending. We are communities repairing, returning and revitalising Country.

Applications from First Nations artists are strongly encouraged.
