Tiarna Herczeg, Juru Manil / Catch up to, Acrylic on birch board, 2022.
KADABAL BANGKARR, translating to broken body, expands Kuku Yalanji and Hungarian artist Tiarna Herczeg’s painting practice to encompass installation, sound and sculptural elements; exploring the ongoing detriments of colonialism to their culture and Country.
Herczeg uses their practice as a ritual for connecting to Country, and their approach to painting comes from a sense of urgency regarding spiritual and cultural identity, often understood through Indigenous, non-western maps. The maps depicted in their work follow paths, songlines and significant places in their Country.
