PROJECT SPACE LAUNCH & PERFORMANCE

PROJECT SPACE
EmbodySimone Darcy
10 September – 2 October 2022

Simone Darcy illuminates the Project Space with Embody, an installation of photographic portraits exploring the construction of self.

Created using cameraless techniques within the darkroom, Darcy’s imagery features glowing forms floating in darkness. Here, light and the human figure collaborate on photo-sensitive paper, constructing, unfolding, and recomposing the depiction of self. Composed of multiple panels of unique, imprinted, material portraits, each embodies a different real or imagined female persona across time – the Harlot, Warrior, Goddess, Wife, Monther, Widow, Mystic and Crone. Darcy defines embodiment in these works as “to give form to, incarnate, contain, and make concrete, in reference to a soul of a spirit”. Alongside these panels are a sequence of full-body photograms, showing luminescence feminine forms. In these, the artist’s body is employed as both a material and agent void of immediate classification, forging portraits that deny the viewer any sense of familiarity. Enveloping the space, these photographs act as a skin, embodying the stories, personas and scars that construct our ideas of the self.

PERFORMANCE

Live dj set

Be immersed in a DJ soundscape as flower boy 卓颖贤 curates a selection of music and field recordings playing with the environment of current Cement Fondu exhibition Soul Seeker: Shana Moulton x Min Wong. The DJ set acts as a form of storytelling, traversing a narrative filled with textures, emotions and culture.

flower boy 卓颖贤 paints emotional images with her classically-trained background combined with forward-thinking production. At the heart of her hazy songwriting is a duality of melancholic love songs and odes to identity and heritage.

Unafraid to play with textures, her soundscapes are anxious, ambient, and affecting in the extreme. Atmospheric beats and experimental percussion are pieced together to form visceral and unrelenting electronica, overlaid with emotive and expressive melodies. As a DJ and live act she has performed in clubs, festivals, and art galleries across Australia as well as in Beijing and Shanghai, scored multiple short films, and facilitated workshops in music production. Since being named FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week in 2018 following the release of her debut EP ‘FASCI(N)ATION’, she has been working on a follow up EP to be released in late 2022.
